The Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team scored a late equalizer, but Morton responded with the game-winner just minutes later to hand the Chargers a 3-2 loss Saturday afternoon at Kleine Field.

Already trailing 2-1, the Chargers (1-8-1 overall, 1-5-1 Region IV) were left with 10 men as Ezechiel Biamungu (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) was sent off in the 76th minute with his second yellow card of the match.

Sandburg, though, scored while a man down for the second straight contest when Benjamin Zambele (Beardstown, Ill./Beardstown) tallied the tying goal in the 81st minute. Luis Suarez (Willis, Texas/Willis) made a long throw into the box, where Zambele found the loose ball and sent a shot into the top-right corner.

The jubilation was short-lived, however, as the Panthers (7-3, 6-1) regained the lead in the 84th minute. Martin Hernandez found Francisco Toral on a run down the right side, and his shot went over the top of keeper Saahil Kapoor (Guilford, England/Guilford County).

The teams went into the half tied at 1. Morton opened the scoring on David Hernandez’s goal in the 19th minute, and the Chargers answered on a beautiful header from Tumelo Matebesi (Pretoria, South Africa/Willowridge) in the 22nd minute. Kym Marsden (Aldershot, England/Connaught) took a free kick near midfield that Matebesi flicked in to tie things up.

Morton regained the lead in the 51st minute as Alexis Sanchez sent a shot in the box toward the net. The shot was deflected into the air with topspin and bounced over Kapoor for a 2-1 Morton advantage.

Five of the Chargers’ eight losses this season have been decided by one goal, and three of their five defeats have been one-goal margins.

Sandburg will step outside of region play to host Lincoln Land at 4 p.m. Wednesday as the Chargers wrap up a string of four straight home contests.
